A place to lay your head at the #mixedusemini

Believe it or not, one of our greatest challenges when renovating the #mixedusemini was determining the best layout for the bedroom entrances. Like many historic homes, this apartment had a quirky layout where you had to walk through one bedroom in order to access the other. Not that this is ever an ideal scenario, we knew it wouldn't work well for a short-term rental in particular, so we reconfigured the floorplan to create a small hallway with the bedroom entrances positioned at 90 degree angles. This configuration created nice symmetry with the bathroom entrance, as well as a natural flow from the living area. During the renovation process, we also added a closet to the second bedroom and vaulted the ceilings to make the rooms feel larger.

Our goal with the design of the bedrooms was to give each room a different look to create a memorable experience for guests, yet ensure that the two rooms felt cohesive. In order to accomplish this, we installed vertical shiplap paneling along the main wall of each room, then used the same shade of blue paint on the paneling, trim, and doors in both rooms. Next, we added fun wallpaper above the paneling, opting for lobsters in one bedroom and sailboats in the other.

The lobster bedroom is the larger of the two and features a caned bed, rattan wall sconces, and bamboo-inspired metal and glass nightstands that we painted a bold shade of coral. The touch of coral is also reflected in the custom embroidered bed linens featuring pretty scalloped detailing.

The sailboat bedroom has a more traditional feel with a Jenny Lind spindle bed, rattan campaign nightstand, and a vintage luggage rack. Model sailboats serve as artwork and add a playful touch to the walls.

Although similar in style, these two bedrooms have their own personalities and serve as the restful retreats for guests at the #mixedusemini.
