Making a splash in the #mixedusemini bathroom

Have you ever walked into a restaurant bathroom and immediately liked the place more because the design was cool? That was our aim with the bathroom renovation at the #mixedusemini. As a short-term rental, we wanted the bathroom to have a fun personality and show that our attention to detail extended to a space that is mostly utilitarian. But at the same time, we needed to be efficient with the layout.

The bathroom design was inspired by the existing clawfoot bathtub. We loved the character it provided, so we chose to keep the original tub, reglazing the inside and painting the outside a bold shade of coral. We also rotated the tub 90 degrees and centered it under the window to make the bathroom feel larger. While the clawfoot tub is fun, we also wanted to ensure the space functioned as a modern bathroom, so we added a showerhead to the wall and a glass panel to help keep the water in. We also added a floor drain underneath the tub to help with any excess water, essentially creating a wet room.

Tile serves as another major element in this bathroom design. We knew we wanted to do some fun inlay designs, so we kept things simple with the material selections, opting for white subway tile for the walls and blue penny tile for the floors. As this property is a short-term rental, we chose to be a bit playful with the tile inlays, using contrasting white penny tile to write "make a splash" in the threshold of the bathroom door—a nod to Marblehead's nautical history, as well as the bathroom itself. We carried the penny tile onto the shower niche, creating a wave design.

Floor Tile / Wall Tile / Dispenser Bottles

A minimal white oak vanity occupies the corner of the room and is topped with durable white quartz. We also added a small marble shelf for extra storage. A vintage milk glass-style oval mirror, conical sconce, and brass faucet complete the space.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Although this bathroom is small, it is full of playful details. We combined affordable and accessible materials in unexpected ways to create a space full of personality and color.
