Finding a kitchen flow at the #mixedusemini

The existing kitchen at the #mixedusemini was definitely the tiniest kitchen we've ever worked with. In fact, it was so small, the refrigerator didn't even fit in the room—it was located out in the sunroom. With plans to make this a short-term rental, we knew we didn't need a large kitchen, but felt like there was a lot of room for improvement.

As part of our renovation, we made a few major changes in order to create a more functional space with better flow. First, we removed the closet housing the mechanicals. Space is precious in a kitchen this small, so we opted to relocate the heating equipment to the attic instead. Second, we added a peninsula extending out from the side wall. The peninsula serves as a practical location for the sink and dishwasher, as well as the dining area. Finally, we vaulted the ceiling to make the space feel more open and airy.

For cabinets, we chose Ikea boxes paired with Semihandmade fronts featuring a beadboard-style design. Lucite and brass cabinet pulls add a touch of glam while maintaining the light and airy feel. Minimal white quartz countertops also contribute a clean and simple aesthetic, allowing other design elements to stand out.

A blue and white striped tile backsplash adds a pop of color with a nautical twist. A vintage stainless steel range hood featuring a scalloped edge serves as an anchor for the space, and coordinates with the retro vibe of the powder blue Smeg fridge.

To balance out the white and stainless steel, we introduced warmth and texture through the remaining selections. A woven rattan chandelier hangs from the vaulted shiplap ceiling, while the counter stools are covered in a bold red and white diamond pattern fabric.

Although this kitchen is small, it is very functional, especially for a short-term rental of this size. Our goal with this renovation was to preserve the original character of this property while creating a more functional space with a unique personality.
